Alpine Hiking and Hunting in the Southern Alps of New Zealand

The Lake Stroll

The Lake Stroll is a 6-7 day adventure hike through four of the South Islands famous sheep stations.

We provide complete logistic support to groups of 4 to 60 hikers including guides, catering, bar, tents, airport transfers, and start-finish accommodation.

Most of our larger groups consist of charity expeditions from Europe and Corporate fundraisers from around the world.

In addition, small groups wishing to get away from the tourist mega-tracks, business team members looking for personal and group development, and family groups enjoy the opportunity to experience a Kiwi national icon, ‘the high country sheep station’.

You will meet the people of the South Island high country and learn about their trials, challenges and achievements. Experience the huge, glacier fed, braided rivers, mountains and grasslands as you hike through high passes and breathe clean, fresh mountain air like no other. Set and achieve your own challenges and objectives for your trip.

Hunting

The hunting season usually starts around mid March and finishes in late June. Most animals rut during this period and it is at this time that the best trophies are usually taken. The following is a list of animals available in the South Island.

• Himalayan Tahr. These animals originated in Nepal and are sought after trophies by hunters from Europe and the USA. New Zealand's South Island Tahr population is world renowned. Hunting these alpine animals provides some of the most challenging experiences available.

• Chamois. An alpine antelope, these graceful and beautiful trophies are found throughout the Southern Alps. The best guides are essential as these often elusive animals are difficult to source.

• Red Deer. We invite hunters into the wilds of Fiordland. The mountains and bush of this amazing region are unique to New Zealand. Our hunting is in true Kiwi style. Bivvies in the bush, living off the land, and doing the hard work to bag trophy stags in the rut. There is nothing to compare to the thrill of roaring at a full grown angry stag deep in the Fiordland bush, enticing him into battle to defend his harem from the intruder (you if you know what you're doing!) Mid April is the best time to go but we only take one group per year on this one so get in quick, there are only four places on each trip. Red deer can be hunted all year round but this is the ultimate!

• Fallow Deer. Fallow can be hunted all year round not too far from home. The rut is slightly later than the Reds in late April to early May and is the best time for trophy stags.

• Wallabies. These animals are found not too far from our home and provide challenging shooting for the best of shooters. They can be driven from cover under a shotgun or sniped from distances. Most often hunted after a gut wrenching loss by the All Blacks to the Australian Rugby team!

All our hunting is free range.

Guided hunts for Himalayan Tahr, Chamois, Red Deer, Fallow Deer, Wallaby, and other small game.

All our hunting is free range. We use helicopters for access only and will not allow hunting from the air. We do not believe that any type of hunting apart from free range, foot hunting is worth recognising as truly sportsmanlike.
Nearby Attractions   The Mackenzie Alpine Trekking Company is located in the central South Island of New Zealand; two and one half-hours drive from Christchurch International Airport on State Highway 8, the main tourist route to Queenstown and the West Coast. The trekking center lies on Balmoral Sheep Station at the southern end of Lake Tekapo in the Mackenzie high country.

Lake Tekapo is an alpine lake fed by numerous glaciers and rivers and is well known throughout the world for its’ unique and beautiful turquoise colour.

The Lake Tekapo Alpine Village has numerous motels, excellent restaurants, a camping ground, grocery shopping and souvenirs.
Other activities in the Lake Tekapo area include guided botanical walks, fixed and rotary wing scenic flights, a family owned and operated ski field, and fishing.

Lake Alexandrina, located within the trekking area, is a world renowned trout fishery.

The “Mackenzie Country” as it is known to Kiwis, was discovered in the mid 1800s by a Gaelic speaking Scottish Highlander who is best known for his prowess at stealing sheep! The legend of James Mackenzie is as well known to inhabitants of the area now, as it was infamous at the time.

It is the pioneering spirit and toughness of those first dwellers of the area that are the inspiration of our tours and hunts.
