Mauna Kea
At 13,796 feet, Mauna Kea is the highest mountain in Hawaii and the highest island mountain in the world. When measured from its base at the ocean's floor, 16000 feet down, it is the tallest mountain in the world. Mauna Kea means "white mountain" referring to its snowcapped peak.
Mauna Kea's location and elevation have made it an important location for atmospheric and astronomical observations. Keck telescope, the worlds largest optical and infrared observatory is located at the summit of Mauna Kea.
How to Get There
It can be reached from Route 200 (Saddle Road). A paved road leaves Saddle Road at Mile 28 and winds its way up to the Visitor Center. The distance from Hilo to the Visitor Center is about 34 miles.
