Mount Whitney

Located in the southern Sierra Nevada and with a height of 4419 meters, Mount Whitney is the highest mountain in the Continental United States. It is situated at the border between Inyo County and Tulare County in California.

Best Time to go to Mount Whitney

Hiking - May to October

Take the Whitney Portal to hike up Mount Whitney. As a safety measure, put your food in approved bear containers. Moreover, take the necessary preparations since the hike up Mount Whitney can be really challenging.

Mountaineering, Ski mountaineering, Backcountry snowboarding - February to early May

In general, the winter conditions in Sierra are mild, but be prepared when it comes to sleeping gear, climbing equipment, and avalanche conditions.

Hi there,

I would like to climb Mount Whitney around 20 October. Although fit to climb some 9,000 ft mountains in the Pyrenees, I don''t know how easy / difficult Mt Whitney will be in terms of technical challenges (ice and equipment required), meteorological conditions, and altitude. Please, any comments, suggestions and tips will help.
