Valdez Glacier Day-Trip
While already well known and respected for their sea-kayaking tours in Prince William Sound, Anadyr Adventures now offers you the opportunity to experience the power and beauty of the Valdez Glacier and the Chugach mountains safely and initmately, via hiking and kayaking.
Valdez Glacier was extensively used during the Gold Rush days of the late 1800s, as an All-American route to the gold fields of interior Alaska. Many fascinating stories have been told about the people who underwent the hardships of early glacial travel while searching for their fortune in the untamed wilderness of Alaska.
Today the glacier lies almost forgotten in the Chugach Mountains near Valdez. A few brave people use the glacier in the winter for snowmachining and another select few use the calm glacial lake to start their white water adventure down the glacier stream in the summer.
Anadyr Adventures guides will transport you by van to the glacial lake where we will kayak in inflatable double kayaks between towering icebergs to the face of the glacier. Here we put on crampons and start our hike on the glacier enjoying expansive views, crossing crevasses, and passing glacial streams which have cut deep ravines in the ice and formed shimmering sky blue pools on the glacier.
No Experience is necessary, low/moderate difficulty. We provide expert guides and all the gear necessary to safely explore the glacier. Dress in layers, bring comfortable hiking shoes, rain gear, lunch, water, camera
Anadyr Adventures has 14 years of experience leading quality sea-kayaking and hiking trips in Prince William Sound. Our experienced and knowledgeable guides will conduct interpretive glaciology discussions as well as share the many tales of miners and fortune seekers who traversed the glacier during the Valdez Gold Rush of 1889.
We carefully select only the safest, reliable and knowledgeable guides to lead you. Our guides are top professionals, who not only teach their skill, but offer interpretive discussions of the local history, geology, flora, and fauna. Whenever possible we make a point to employ locally in order to benefit the local community and its economy directly, thereby providing further incentive for local support and preservation of natural areas and wildlife habitat.
Because we are locally owned, we have more in-depth knowledge to share with you. The majority of our guides are Alaskans as well. Their knowledge of the Alaska wilderness, not to mention our native fauna & flora, was gained from years of first-hand experience in the backcountry, and not read from a book a few months prior to your tour. Your guide will have valuable insight to offer and practical knowledge to share on the areas you'll be traveling through. We strive to make sure our guides are equally well versed in the natural history & geology of the area and often employ university professors and museum curators to assist with our guide training.
