Have you ever dreamed of hiking
across open Alaskan tundra or over lonely and remote alpine passes where few ever
go? Do you long to stand on a ridge crest and wonder at mountain range after mountain range
receeding into forever? Have you ever walked across a glacier hundreds of feet
thick? Experience this and much more on one of our wilderness treks in Wrangell-St. Elias National
Park. This is some of the most wildly beautiful country in Alaska, and that's saying a lot. And no one knows Wrangell-St. Elias better than we do. There's so much more to this
wilderness area than just the ever-popular Skolai Pass. Let us take you into parts of the
backcountry where few people ever visit. Our treks range from 3 day easier trips up to 10 day
treks that will challenge and amaze you.
Our trips begin in McCarthy, Alaska - an interesting destination in its own right. Once a copper mining boomtown, McCarhy is enjoying a new life as the gateway to Wrangell - St. Elias National Park.

The Seven Pass Route - Strenuous 8-10 days backpacking We start off our trek by flying into Iceberg Lake near the massive Bagley Ice
Field. This is a glacially dammed lake and the floating chunks of ice give the
lake its locally known moniker. We will certainly want to spend some time taking
pictures here. The second day we put on crampons for a fun day of crossing a
glacier! Our camp is at the edge of another lake in a spot that is known to
produce some stunning sunset photo opportunities. From here we continue on with
high ridge traverses, another exciting glacier crossing and more. Every day brings new and different terrain as we move from glaciers to lush
green valleys to alpine ridges to wind swept passes. The scenery on this route
is second to none with dramatic, snow capped peaks both near and far. This is
an excellent choice for someone with a sense of adventure and the desire for
a very special alaskan backpacking adventure. Pyramid Peak Traverse - Moderate/Strenuous 6 Days Backpacking No sooner are we out of the plane than we face our first challenge, a turbulent
stream crossing - but it's not as bad as it looks. Once safely across, we will
want to get moving to warm up our chilly legs. A few hours of hiking take us
to a pass where we make our first camp. The view from our perch offers an exciting
sneak preview of the journey ahead. We drop down to a rushing stream and take
advantage of the easy hiking on its gravel bars. But soon we are heading back
up into the high country and onto the ridges. We continue hiking along, doing
a high traverse of the base of Pyramid Peak and later slip across the shoulder
of Andrus. This portion of the route will make us glad that we brought along
those extra rolls of film. From the lofty ridge we begin to drop down into the valley below where exploring
of a different sort awaits. The ruins and relics from gold mining days invites
investigation all along the creek valley. We will stop for lunch at the old
town site of Chititu Camp and explore the ruins. This is a classic Alaskan hiking
trek with unequaled scenery. Pyramid
Peak Traverse - Easier/Moderate 5 Days Backpacking At the periphery
of the central hill country is a ragged ridge line of rugged crags and peaks
that form a dramatic backdrop to the gentler terrain of our route. The rolling
hills make this a good choice for family trips or for those just wanting a more
mellow adventure.
An exceptional Alaskan backpacking trip and our most popular trek. This trek
will leave you well satisfied and feeling that you have experienced that very
best that Alaska and Wrangell-St. Elias has to offer. The route offers constantly
changing terrain and views that will amaze you.
The flight to our airstrip takes us through the University Range and
some of the most stunning backountry terrain that the park has to offer. Our
route travels through country that is as varied as it is magnificent.
Families with will love this trip. The easier terrain of the area and
the many lakes that are sprinked all around make it a great family hiking choice.
This is a delightful backpacking trip through a magical, almost pastoral landscape.
We will pass through rolling hills sprinkled with tiny lakes that sparkle like
freshly cut emeralds nestled among velvety green pillows.
