Volunteer Trail Building Day at Galena Creek Park

Reno, Nevada - Volunteers are needed to team up with local youth on a new one-mile trail building project from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, August 2 at Galena Creek Regional Park.

Volunteers will be working alongside local 17- and 18-year olds who signed up for a summer of service with the Great Basin Institute's Great Basin Naturalists program. Community Volunteer Trail Building D ay is a great way for the youth to show what they've learned, while making a lasting contribution to the public.

What: Community Volunteer Trail Building Day
Where: Galena Creek Regional Park, Mt. Rose Highway. Use the first entrance to the park and meet near the restrooms.
When: 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 2.

The mission of the Great Basin Naturalists youth program is to develop the next generation of conservationists through hands-on learning opportunities. Participants have spent the past seven weeks camping in the Tahoe Basin and working on the Tahoe Rim Trail. They have studied Lake Tahoe ecology and history along with astronomy, ornithology, and the basics of finding their way through the wilderness by using maps and a compass. They have also become certified in Leave No Trace, First Aid, and CPR.

Galena Creek Regional Park is managed by Washoe County's Department of Regional Parks and Open Space. The Department's mission is to provide exceptional parks and open space, and recreational opportunities while preserving our natural, historical, and cultural resources. Healthy Hikes Series at Stark Parks

Canton, OH - The Stark County Park District's fifth annual Healthy Hikes Series will start this coming Saturday, August 2.

During this annual hiking event, participants have the opportunity to obtain a free hiking stick after completing the 12 designated trails. Participants who already own hiking sticks have the option to get a frog charm which symbolizes the park district's mascot FeLeap.

Those who will not be able complete the 12 trails can still get a free hiking stick by simply signing up for the non-profit organization, Friends of the Stark Parks.

Interested participants may obtain Healthy Hikes registration forms from various signature sites such as Canal Fulton Canalway Center, Downtown Ford in Canton, Ernie's Bike Shop in Massillon, and Exploration Gateway at Sippo Lake Park.

Girl Injured in Hiking Accident

A seven-year old girl fell over 40 feet while on a hiking trip with her family at the Helen Hunt Falls, located in Cheyenne Canyon last July 24.

According to reports, the young girl lost her footing and slipped down 20 feet of the falls and then another 20 feet down.

In an interview with 11 News, Lt. Brian Keyes of the Colorado Springs Fire Department said that the gir l was conscious, breathing, and talking when the rescue team arrived in the location of the accident, but she was in critical condition. The name of the victim was not released.

Hiking Volunteers Sought to Form Task Force

The Transportation Department of Scottsdale, Arizona is inviting volunteers to form a special citizens' task force that will recommend policies and plans for the city's planned hiking trails.

Aside from establishing trail policies, the task force will manage the neighborhood trails and assess which trails should be prioritized in the Trails Master Plan. The group will also consider t he guidelines in designing trails, sources of funds, and maintenance.

The City Council had approved Scottsdale's Trails Master Plan in 2004. The plan includes the development of 289 miles of trails throughout the city and on the exterior part of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Less than half have already been completed.
