CLARKSVILLE - It is not a state park, as what people usually think of it. Mill Creek Park is the perfect venue for boating, fishing, camping, trail riding, picnicking, hiking, and other recreational opportunities in Clark County’s "backyard".
With its 2,600 acres of woodland and 811 acres of lake surface, Mill Creek Park is locally owned and operated by the Clark County Park District. It caters to local residents and has become an attraction to visitors.
Ron Stone, president of the park district’s board of commissioners, said that planning for Mill Creek Lake began in 1962 as a flood control project. A large earthen dam was built in 1978 for the creation of a new lake. The park formally opened on May 29, 1982.
Although the park is open to everyone, discounted rates to boating, camping, trail riding, hiking, and other recreational opportunities are given to district residents. This, according to the organizer, is their way of paying back their taxpayers. However, there is no charge for admission to the park, which offers two playgrounds and numerous picnic areas. Mill Creek Park opened on April 1 and shall operate until October 31.
