San Dieguito River Park Receives $71,000

The San Dieguito River Park will be receiving $71,000 from the San Diego County Water Authority for temporarily closing a section of the hiking trail located on the north shore of Lake Hodges.

The mon ey received by the park will be used to construct a recreational path for pedestrian and equestrian below the dam near Del Dios Gorge. Both the existing and planned trails are part of the proposed Coast to Crest trail system for hiking, horseback riding, and bicycling.

Spanning 80 miles, the trail system will connect the beach at Del Mar with Vulcan Mountain located near Julian. About 30 miles of the 80-mile-trail system has already been finished.

Park Plan Includes Development of Trails

A final site plan for North Ottawa Dunes has been presented by Ottawa County parks officials last Tuesday. The site plan, when approved, will lead to the development of a main hiking trail later this year.

Three planning sessions in Spring Lake has been held to seek public participation. Officials presented plans that focus on the development of a main trail from North Beach Park north toward P.J. Hoffmaster State Park; improvement of 10 miles of existing trails and construction of facilities such as parking areas, dune overlooks and access boardwalks.

John Scholtz, director of the Ottawa County Parks and Recreation Commission, says that the park is aimed for hiking and cross-country skiing. Mountain biking, horse back riding, and off road vehicles would not be allowed. The plan will still be presented to the parks and recreation commission for approval this March.

Officers Advise Hikers to Use Caution,Common Sense

Lawton - Officials are encouraging hikers to use "caution" and "common sense" when going through Wichita Mountains.

Deputy Refuge Manager Ralph Bryant urges hikers to be prepared for 24 hours. "You sho uld pack like you're going to spend a night even if you're planning a two or three hour hike," Bryant said. Hikers should come with food, water, and cell phone, should have told others about their hiking plans, and should dress for winter.

Bryant also advised hikers to refrain from climbing Mt. Scott since the top part is still covered with ice.

Ottawa to Partly Fund West Coast Trail Repair

The federal government of Ottawa will be paying a part of the expenses for the clean-up of the West Coast Trail, which has been damaged by a series of storms recently. Environment Minister John Baird has announced last Friday that Ottawa will be shouldering part of the expenses.

The West Coast Trail starts from Bamfield to Port Renfrew, measuring 77 kilometers. The trail is a part of the Pacific Rim National Park and is considered as one of the top hiking trails in North America. About 5,000 hikers around the world have trekked it last year.

Baird also said that a cost assessment must be done and that professional foresters will be consulted regarding the trail repair. Park Crews have already assessed a 12-km stretch of the trail and found almost 600 trees that have fallen.

Volunteers Restore Tex Lyon Trail

North Island - The Tex Lyon Trail, a seven-kilometer recreational path starting from Beaver Harbour to Dillon Point, has been restored after years of neglect.

Ten trail clearers from Port Hardy started last Saturday but Jerry Davison, an avid hiker, already started clearing the trail all by his self since last year. "..But it's so much easier and way more fun with a big group," Davison said.

Salal, a native Pacific Northwest shrub, covers the trail, making it virtually nonexistent. Board walks still have to be replaced. The trail clearers hope to re-open the trail this spring. The trail offers views of queen Charlotte Strait and Fort Rupert, a historic village.
