Three Hikers Rescued in the Adirondacks
TUESDAY, 28 NOVEMBER 2006
Last Saturday, three hikers from three different climbing groups were rescued after having unintentionally injured themselves during their trek in the Adirondacks.
Paul Miller of Orange, Massachusetts fell on an icy trail near Mercy Dam after nightfall with only a headlamp as a source of light. Miller had hurt his leg, and being an emergency medical technician, he established that it was a fracture. His hiking companions splinted his leg, and after forest rangers arrived, he was brought to a medical center for treatment. Before him, two hikers were also injured. One was in the Giant Mountain who was brought to a medical center by his companions while the other was in the Wolf Jaw Mountains who was assisted by forest rangers.
The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) recommends hikers to prepare for all kinds of conditions that they may encounter when hiking to higher elevations. They advise hikers to carry crampons when there are icy patches. DEC explains that unpredictable conditions can be brought about by fluctuating temperatures.
