Those who look at rabbis or any religious figure for that matter as overly serious people who do not have time for fun, then Colorado's Rabbi Jamie Korngold may just make you change your mind.

In a fea
ture written by Melissa Trujillo of the Associated Press, she writes about Korngold and her unusual style of preaching to her congregation. The self-proclaimed "Adventure Rabbi" can preside over bar mitzvahs, weddings and other ceremonies anywhere imaginable. She can do it in ski and snowboard resorts in winter and other outdoor locations for activities such as hiking during summer.

But despite of her style, she says that she does not forget to put more weight on the religious aspect of what she does by saying that the frosting should not be a substitute for the cake.

To read Trujillo's entire article, visit South Florida's www.sunsentinel.com where it appeared.

According to a news report published in www.alpinezone.com, the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) is seeking volunteers which include hikers and outdoor enthusiasts to participate in its Mountain Watch science program on June 10-18.

The event is scheduled to coincide with the Alpine Flower Watch Week (AFWW). In the science program, volunteers will be documenting seasonal events such as, "the blooming of alpine flowers and the onset of fall leaf coloration in the higher elevations," the article said.

The collective observations of the volunteers will then help in the creation of a long-term "ecological database" which in turn will help in providing a deeper understanding of how climate change and other factors affect mountain habitats. In that way, Mountain Watch and AFWW can raise awareness of fragile ecosystems and encourage mountain stewardship.

To read more of the article and for information on how you can volunteer, visit Alpine Zone's website at www.alpinezone.com

With the 14th Annual National Trails Day just around the corner, here are the top 10 ways that you can "Experience Your Outdoors," according the American Hiking Society:
  1. Discover the sites and so unds of bird watching. This popular activity is enjoyed by 46 million Americans every year. Grab your binoculars, a field guide, and start practicing your bird calls. Join the Benton Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Great Falls, Montana on a guided birding tour through the refuge led by a knowledgeable birder.
  2. Add a little competition to your day by entering a trail race or fun run. If a casual hike is a little too slow for your style, join Rainier to Ruston Rail-Trail Relay and Ultra in Washington State. The Rainier to Ruston attracts trail runners and walkers to race the entire 51-mile course in relays from Mt. Rainier to Puget Sound.
  3. Hike a trail by moonlight. Moonlight hikes are a unique way to see the landscape in a new light. Make sure to bring your headlamp and be ready to sharpen your senses. Lake Metigoshe State Park, North Dakota invites you to explore nature's shift into the night.
  4. Go geocaching & letterboxing. These modern day treasure hunts, using GPS technology, are the hottest trends in hiking hobbies. Join the Killingworth Land Conservation Trust on the Hammonasset River Trail in Connecticut. Your hike leader will teach you the basics of geocaching & letterboxing.
  5. Join a clean-up team or grab a shovel for some trail maintenance. Most trails would not exist if it were not for the volunteers who build, maintain and keep them clean. Last year on National Trails Day, volunteers contributed more than 200,000 hours of rehabbing trails! REI's Santa Rosa, California store will host a trail work party in Hood Mountain Regional Park doing tread work and removing invasive species. Bring a pair of gloves and a smile!
  6. Get active with your baby. Baby-joggers with mountain bike tires and toddler-trotting frame packs, what will they invent next! Bringing your baby along on a hike or a greenway jog is a fun way to spice up your workout and provides quality parent-child bonding time. The Stroller-Fit® franchise of Portland, Maine is offering interactive classes in local parks all week long. It's a great way to introduce your child to the outdoors.
  7. Rivers are trails too! Go for a paddle. Water trails are recreational waterways on a lake, river, or ocean between specific points with access points and picnic and camping sites for the boating public. Experience a one-of-a-kind event along the 100+ mile Great Calusa Blueway Paddling Trail in southwest Florida. Want to learn how to paddle? Eastern Mountain Sports is offering kayaking demos at an event in Valley Forge National Historical Park, Pennsylvania.
  8. Take the kids on a scavenger hunt. This is a great way to introduce children to outdoor recreation and familiarize them with their natural surroundings. The Girl Scouts of Indian Waters Council will lead a trail scavenger hunt through Camp Nawakwa, a YMCA family camp in northern Wisconsin. This is also a great time to showcase the principles of Leave No Trace Outdoor Ethics.
  9. Experience a trail on horseback. Learn what it means to be an equestrian and saddle up with the Cuyahoga Chapter of the Ohio Horseman's Council (OHC). Thirteen chapters of the OHC in Northeast Ohio are offering members and guests trail rides showcasing the beautiful trails of Cleveland Metroparks.
  10. Swap gear and learn new skills. Recycling is not only for paper and plastic; your gear can be given new life by passing it along to another or with a clever repair. Buy, sell, trade or donate your used outdoor gear while also swapping stories and tips on caring for outdoor equipment with other backpackers. Backwoods Equipment, located in Omaha, Nebraska is offering staff-led demonstrations, food and drink, and gear raffles throughout the day.
These ways are handpicked by the American Hiking Society in line with the theme of this year's National Trails Day which is "Experience Your Outdoors." This year's theme enjoins everyone to explore trails in different and in ways that they have never considered before.

For more information on the 14th Annual National Trails Day which will be held on June 3, you may refer to the American Hiking Society's website at www.americanhiking.org and the National Trails Day website at www.nationaltrailsday.org.

If you wish to hone your free riding skills no matter what your riding level of experience is, then head on to New Zealand’s South Island and, “enjoy true winter conditions, terrain park and pipe riding,” on July and August.

The seven-day snowboard camp will help experienced riders to develop their performance further as well as help beginners get started with the fundamentals of snowboarding. Unlike its counterparts in the North Hemisphere, this camp will devote the whole day to pure instruction and execution on the 2nd until the 4th day of the camp from the camp’s coaches.

Aside from learning free riding, participants will also get a chance to try out other sports such as bungee jumping, mountain biking, hiking and a lot more. They will also get to explore New Zealand’s scenery as well as check out the different restaurants, shops and a lot more around Queensland.

So if you wish to participate in this year’s snowboard camp, then follow this link and learn more about it.

From www.2000k.soliloq.com:

On July 6th 2006, avid hikers Christian Boyko and Emmanuelle Plattet will trade
their hiking gear to embark on a cross-Europe bicycle trip from Bern, Switzerland to Kiev in the Ukraine some 2100 kilometers away to raise awareness for the long term effects of the Chernobyl incident and the ongoing emotional stresses that people endure even today, 20 years after the accident. “We both are adventurous in nature and have taken many adventures throughout our lives but we wanted to do a little more on this trip”, explains Christian.

Their trip will last about 24 days and cover Switzerland, Germany, Poland Czech Republic and The Ukraine and is sponsored in association with FOCCUS (FRIENDS OF CHERNOBYL CENTERS U.S., INC) a non-profit organization whose main goal is to raise awareness of the long term effects of the Chernobyl incident, which the UN describes as “the greatest environmental catastrophe in the history of humanity”. This extraordinary trip has two purposes: (1) to raise public awareness about the Chernobyl catastrophe in this 20th anniversary year and (2) to garner resources to support Community Centers serving thousands of people whose lives have been forever changed as a result of the Chernobyl accident.

What happened in Chernobyl, Ukraine?

The now inactive Chernobyl nuclear power plant is located in Chernobyl, Ukraine, an area bordered by Russia and Belarus. On April 26, 1986 a faulty monitoring procedure during a routine test caused an explosion and meltdown in one of the plant’s four reactors, spewing more than 200 times the amount of radiation released at Hiroshima and Nagasaki into the atmosphere. The resulting fire took more than 600,000 fire-fighters and emergency workers to extinguish. It took over two years to partially clean up the site to prevent further environmental contamination and radiation exposure.

The Chernobyl nuclear disaster, which contaminated 63,000 square miles of land, has affected more than seven million people in many ways. More than 350,000 people have been relocated from their homes and nearly 150,000 invalids are listed on the Chernobyl registry in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine. Christian and Emmanuelle have teamed up with FOCCUS who work directly within these communities, to inform the public that the Chernobyl accident is far from being over. One of the primary goals of FOCCUS is to strengthen recovery efforts of communities in Russia and Ukraine that have been severely affected by the Chernobyl nuclear accident and Christian and Emmanuelle hope to bring new light to the ongoing struggle of everyday life with the 2000 km campaign of hope.

How can you help?

As part of the “2000 km campaign of hope” their website www.2000k.soliloq.com was initiated to spread the word and educate the people of the ongoing problems of the Chernobyl accident. Supported by a fabulous gallery that will be updated day to day during the trip which allows the public to follow and send comments in real time during their 24 day journey. Plus you get a chance to see new photos and information on the road into the Chernobyl zone and all the stops in between.

The 2000 km campaign is a campaign for awareness therefore it is easy to get involved. Just send them a little support and inform yourself on the issue of Chernobyl at their website. This small creative act on your part will do much to promote a more humane and compassionate world not only for those affected by Chernobyl and for all of us who care about the world we live in. If you doubt this, please explore the web site www.2000k.soliloq.com as a first step in your commitment to this project.

The road is a long and winding path that starts within all of us and, although it will end in Kiev, we hope that it will live in your hearts forever.
