Banff Centre Offers Project Grants

The Banff Mountain Grants Program is still on the lookout for projects that, “communicate the stories of mountain landscapes as places of ecological, inspirational and cultural value, and that celebrate the spirit of adventure.”

Interested individuals or organizations may apply for grants of up to $5,000 Canadian as long as their particular projects, “creatively interpret the environment, natural history, human heritage, arts, philosophy, lifestyle, and adventure, in and of the mountains.” Parties have until June 1 to submit their applications.

Aside from the creative interpretation of the things related to the mountains, projects should also have a communications component such as films, literature and photography so that they could be brought before a public audience.

The first granting program of its kind, the Banff Mountain Grants Program is, “committed to helping people share their mountain experience with a public audience,” according Mountain Culture director, Bernadette McDonald.

Hike, Meditate and Practice Yoga On April 28-30

Spend as much time outdoors as you would exploring your inner self. Experience hiking, yoga and simple meditation from April 28-30 at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in Berkshire Massachusetts.

Th e program is open to everyone. There, you will be given the opportunity to explore and appreciate the natural beauty of the Berkshires. After the hike, you will return indoors and will have the time to turn inward and explore your inner self with the help of a, “simple and deeply relaxing yoga and meditation experience.” At the end of the day, you and all the participants will have a soothing foot massage.

Aside from those already mentioned, you will also be able to learn the following:

Self-awareness, mindfulness, and compassion exercises

Breath and movement coordination

Healing yoga postures

Simple meditation techniques

A guided partner foot massage.

The workshop/hiking trip will be presented by Randal Williams, MA. He is a professional-level Kripalu yoga teacher and bodyworker. He also has a degree on Jungian and yogic psychology. He will also be giving the same program from June 2-4.

Writing Workshop for Outdoor Enthusiasts

Do you love to write as much as you love the outdoors? If yes, then sign up for the workshop sponsored by the Colorado Mountain Club.

The workshop entitled, “Adventure Writing: Getting More Out of Gett ing Out” will be conducted by Bob Root at the Golden State Park on May 20, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. The whole day event will let participants, “record and reflect upon (their) outdoor experiences,” through their writing of essays, memoirs and articles while at the same time helping them to write those experiences, “more fully and vividly.” It is open to both private writers and aspiring authors.

Root, the workshop's instructor, taught composition and creative non-fiction at the Central Michigan University. Aside from that, he also taught outdoor writing sessions at the Traverse Bay Summer Workshops.

American Hiking Society Is Seeking Interns

The American Hiking Society is currently offering internship programs to help in the society's various activities in either their Maryland or Tennessee office. Candidates must possess excellent written and verbal c ommunication skills, as well as strong research and organizational skills and should have an interest in conservation and/or outdoor recreation.

Once accepted, the intern can learn about a variety of things such as non-profit management, recreation and conservation policy, volunteer programs, communications, fund raising and development. Aside from that, interns will also be able to experience attending and reporting on congressional hearings, writing for the American Hiker Magazine as well as helping in organizing the Volunteer Vacations and the National Trail Day programs. Accepted interns will also be receiving a stipend of $500. They may choose to work part time or full time, with flexible scheduling.

Join the NTTP Seminars in the US this Week

The National Trails Training Program (NTTP) will be sponsoring several seminars around the United States this week. So if you wish to learn how to maintain the trails and have the survival skills in the outdoors, t hen head on to the seminar venue near you.

There will be seminars in Vermont, Cincinnati, Virginia, Alaska, Missouri, Texas and New York from April 7-9. Some of the topics to be covered by these seminars are the techniques for construction and maintenance of sustainable foot paths, map and compass skills and the proper use of tools to split and shape stones.

The NTTP is a trail organization is composed of Federal agencies, training providers, nationwide supporters, professional contractors and providers of products and services. Its website at www.nttp.net provides information on various trail programs and seminars around the United States in different times of the year as well as other international trail organizations partnered up with it.
