AMC Summit 2006 to be Held Jan. 28
WEDNESDAY, 18 JANUARY 2006
Everyone is invited to the Appalachian Mountain Club's (AMC) Summit 2006 on January 28 at the Hotel Waltham/Boston. Aside from the business meeting, nine workshops will be offered that will prove to be useful to every outdoor sports aficionado.
The following workshops will be offered:
- Lobbying for Conservation In this workshop, AMC Conservation Chair and Connecticut State Representative Jim O' Rourke will teach the significance of grassroots lobbying. Also, participants will learn how to contact officials, follow-up techniques and more.
- Mountain Watch: AMC Volunteers for Clean Air Participants will learn how to watch out for the health of the mountains through data collection. The data will be used to determine climate and air quality. Also, the data will be instrumental in improving ecological laws and awareness.
- Excerpts from Benedictus, A Film About, By and For New England Climbers Local filmmakers will present a documentary on the adventures of Tom Callaghan at the "Big Wall" section of Cannon.
- Go Global with AMC! Explore AMC's Major Excursions Program This workshop will show you the adventures around the world AMC has prepared for this year.
- Backcountry First Aid: An Introduction This practical and useful workshop will teach participants first aid in the backcountry. A hands-on practice and possible scenarios will be shown for better understanding.
- All About AMC's Maine Woods Initiative Details of AMC's land conservation strategy in Maine will be announced. A Q&A portion will be conducted with AMC's forest ecologist and Maine Woods Initiative Project leader.
- Discover the Beauty of Quebec in our National Parks to the North Awareness of outdoor sports opportunities in Quebec will be unveiled.
- Cooperative Conservation in the Majestic Mahoosucs An educational session about conservation work and partnership formation for land protection. AMC looks after land, recreational access and community economics of Mahoosucs region.
- "Stay Found" with the AMC With this workshop, the chances of getting lost when hiking or climbing is minimal. The workshop will include what to do if they get lost and how to educate children on safe hiking.
- On and Off the Trail…All the Way to Mount Everest Be wowed with Fred Stott's recount of his adventures and how he got to the Everest Base Camp and the summit of Mount Pumori. The recount will come from Fred's Book "On and Off The Trail (Seventy Years with the Appalachian Mountain Club)."
