Winter Camping

Winter Camping Camping in summer is a great experience. You get to see nature in full bloom and have a wonderful time eating outdoors with family and friends. While summer offers a nice adventure, winter can give a different kind of Camping. With pristine snow all around you and the cool atmosphere, Camping during cold weather is surely a must-try. However, as with all other winter activities, there are several important things to consider before heading out. The cold temperature is obviously one of those factors to take into account. In fact, you will bring the essential pieces of gear and apparel with the cold weather in mind. In this section, know what should be included in your plan and learn what you need to prepare in a Winter Camping trip:

  • Know the Camping area and the abilities of everyone in the group. Take note of the route that you will be taking and the level of snow on the site.

  • Staying warm is a primary consideration when camping out during winter. Adopt the Three Layer System. This is all about wearing a base layer or thermal underwear, insulation layer, and outer shell. Dressing in layers will keep you warm and dry. Just peel off or add layers to adjust to temperature changes. However, do not wear too many layers. This may make you sweat a lot or restrict your movement. Clothes made of wool are ideal in Winter Camping as this material is water-resistant, durable, and has insulating property.

In addition, a lot of body heat is lost through the head, so make sure to don a hat or balaclava.

  • Use a 4-season Hiking Tent. This is strong enough to withstand windy and snowy weather.

  • Dry air makes you lose body heat more quickly. Drink lots of water to generate heat and prevent dehydration.

  • Hypothermia and Frostbite are conditions to watch out for during winter. Know early detection, prevention, and treatment of Hypothermia and Frostbite before you go Winter Camping.

  • It takes more time to cook food under cold conditions so make sure to bring easy-to-prepare meals such as freeze dried foods. Moreover, make sure to eat foods rich in carbohydrates and protein so you will have that much needed energy to function properly and think clearly during cold weather.

Winter Camping is a great opportunity to be one with nature and see Camping in a different perspective. As they say, you can only fully understand what a certain activity is like if you have tried it. With enough preparation, you will have a fun and snowy Camping experience.
