Thru-Hiking
If you are a serious hiker and you like taking long-distance trails and staying on the camp for several days, then you might want to try Thru-Hiking. This refers to hiking and finishing a very long trail, either in one trip or in sections. There are many trails where Thru-Hiking is done such as Long Trail in Vermont and the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail. But the Hiking trail that usually comes to mind when Thru-Hiking is talked about is the Appalachian Trail or AT. This is a well-marked Hiking trail which is more than 2000 miles long. With this distance, it takes approximately six or seven months to complete the hike. Its trailheads are Springer Mountain in Georgia and Mount Katahdin in Maine.
Taking a 2000-mile hike is a hard endeavor. In fact, the percentage of hikers who actually finished the entire trail (one hike or section hike) is only about 20%. Therefore, Thru-Hiking should be taken very seriously. It takes thorough planning, right gear and equipment, and physical and mental readiness. You really need to have a good state of mind and an able body to finish the trail, whether in one trip or in sections which can take years.
To prepare for a Thru-Hiking trip, take practice hikes with a fully-loaded backpack and overnight camps. These will give you a good feel of your equipment and you will be able to check if you are fit enough for the physical challenges of the trail. This will also give you an idea on how far you can go while carrying your pack.
Pack weight is a major consideration in Thru-Hiking or in any Hiking trip for that matter. Just knowing how many miles you need to cover to finish the AT is enough indication that you need to pack light. In other words, take time to decide what items you really cannot go Hiking without and what things are not really essential in your trip. Besides, you will pass by numerous towns where you can get your food and supplies. Just do not forget to bring a hefty amount of money, approximately $4000 - $5000 so you will be able to survive in this six- or seven-month AT adventure.
Thru-Hiking is a challenging but rewarding outdoor experience. A trail can bring a lot to those who are able to finish it: the sense of accomplishment, meeting new friends to whom you share the same passion and deeper understanding of the environment. That is why no matter how difficult any long-distance trail can be, there are still thru-hikers who will take the challenge.
