Snow Hiking
Adventurous people would walk a thousand miles to see beautiful places, and sometimes that walk isn't always horizontal. It can also be vertical, or uphill, and sometimes the season is a non-factor in this type of escapade.
Snow hiking is one such activity where people can enjoy an aerobically intense walk to ice-covered mountain tops and along slopes, the reward of which (apart from the workout) is a breathtaking view of the magnificent landscapes below or that of a neighboring country (if you get that high enough). If one gets to the summit, the achievement could count as one of the perks as well.
Apart from leisure, snow hiking is also a sport: the mountain trails have varying characteristics that can try hikers' different levels of expertise or abilities–and all terrains are snow-covered at that, of course.
One may also opt to walk downhill. He may take a chairlift or cable car to the top of the mountain and walk down, making use of the same safe tracks.
Hikers also have a choice to have a guided climb or an independent one. A paid guide will take you through beautiful trails and sights while a self-initiated hike will bring surprises and explorations to the most spontaneous of travelers.
The basic equipment needed for snow hiking are snow shoes and Hiking Poles, although some advanced hikers can choose to do without the latter. Hiking Poles are usually made of light metal like aluminum and are used like canes to grip into snow and make life easier for the hiker.
Snow shoes, on the other hand, are also known as Hiking Boots but with a waterproof feature so as not to let the water seep in.
Other accessories include a hiking navigation system to guide you, should you be on an independent climb (a state-of-the-art compass, if you may), and a sports watch that can withstand the pressures of air and weather conditions. You may also want to bring a pedometer to see how many steps you are taking during your ascent.
Here are some tips to enjoy your climb to the fullest:
- Bring a jacket or a parka. The temperatures can change rapidly, so it is best for you to be prepared for the sudden alteration.
- Bring enough water to last you a day as it can be a tiring activity despite the cold weather. However, do not leave water bottles or any piece of trash along the trails.
- Always check out the weather before you hike. A sunny day is always good.
As with any other activity, remembering to put on the proper gear and observing safety precautions bring out the most satisfaction out of it. The best prize should come once you have reached the top: an exhilarating view of the world as you've never seen it before.
