Hiking Sticks
Nowadays, most hikers use Hiking Poles. These are great in maintaining balance and stability when hiking. There are others, however, who go for the good, old Hiking Stick, also called a walking stick.
The Hiking Stick is a pole which serves as the extension of your body. Take note that in a Hiking trip, the trail is not always smooth and flat. There may be steep areas or streams that you need to cross. A Hiking Stick will be able to provide the extra support that you need. Just like a pair of Hiking Poles, the wooden Hiking Stick provides additional support and stability especially on difficult terrain, helps keep your balance, and reduces stress on your feet, legs, knees, and back. When going uphill, it gives added power and stability, while it provides extra support and reduces the shock on your joints when descending steep areas. Some people even use their Hiking Sticks to protect themselves against dogs.
The wooden Hiking Stick has other uses. It can serve as your tent pole and a great tool to move tree branches out of your way. You can also lean on your stick when you need to take a short break.
There are several things to take into account when it comes to choosing a Hiking Stick. There are a lot of sticks to choose from. Walking sticks can be made from oak, composite fiber, or hickory. In general, the Hiking Stick should be about six inches above your elbow or as high as your shoulder. Check the diameter. You should be able to grip the stick comfortably. You may also want to choose a stick that is thin and lightweight but is strong enough to support your weight and durable so it will not break easily and can be used for a long time.
The Hiking Stick is a good alternative to a pair of Hiking Poles, but what to use is definitely up to you. Use whatever makes you feel comfortable on the trail.
