Tent Characteristics - How Tents Differ

Tent Characteristics - How Tents Differ Beside the different types of tents handled in the Tent Types & Classifications section you can distinguish tents from each other by looking at the following Tent Characteristics:
  • Tent Weight
This is the weight of the tent. Of course the lighter the tent the easier it will feel on your back while your hiking out. Manufacturers often give a couple of weight specifications with their tents:

    • Packed Weight: is the weight of the entire tent set as you buy it in the store
    • Trail / Minimum Weight: the weight of just the tent, fly and poles
    • Fastpack Weight: fly sheet, poles, and groundcloth

  • Protection from Rain and Snow
The tent's ability to withstand water pressure is measured in Pounds per Square Inch (psi). The higher the number the more waterproof the tent is.

  • Stability in Wind
The construction of the tent largely determines the tent's ability to withstand wind pressures.

  • Durability
The strength of the fabric and the skeletal elements determine how durable the tent will be.

  • Setup Difficulty
The effort it takes to setup the tent differs from tent to tent. Especially in rough conditions this factor can make a big difference.

  • Roominess
The spaciousness of the tent. Often measures in the number of people it can accommodate. Especially in rougher conditions where backpack/equipment storage and cooking might have to be done inside this could be an important factor.

  • Color
The color of the tent will determine the light color and brightness inside the tent. For expected sunny conditions you are best off with orange, gray, green, or blue. Yellow, White and Cream are better for dimmer light. For snowy conditions bright colors like yellow and orange will make sure that your tent stands out in the snow.

  • Ventilation/Breathability
Condensation is an age old problem of tents. Double-wall tents with a waterproof outer fly and an inner breathable inner tent give better protection against condensation. Single walled tents use vents, mesh and waterproof but breathable fabrics to achieve the same.

  • Cost
Tents can be cheap or expensive. It is really up to you on how much you want to spend on a tent.

There are many different kinds of Hiking Tents, each having its own use, advantages, and drawbacks. Know the various Tent Characteristics and choose the tent that suits your Hiking needs.
