Coasteering - Coastal Hiking and Climbing

Coasteering Coasteering is all about being able to cross whatever the coastline can throw at you. In this section, know more about this Hiking Discipline - its nature, terrain, challenges and dangers, as well as the necessary gear and equipment.

Terrain

As the word suggests, the chosen terrain in Coasteering is the coastline. Besides sandy beaches and dunes, you should be prepared to cross rocks, estuaries, and lagoons.

Challenges/Dangers

Coasteering has the same added dangers of slippery footwear and the danger of Hypothermia that come with Canyoneering. Added challenges are the tides, currents, waves, and constantly changing water levels. Make sure to check with locals for the weather conditions, tidal situations, and possible riptides. If you are swept away by a current, remain calm and swim perpendicular to the current until you are clear from its force. Even marine life can pose an added danger. Weeds can make rock surfaces very slippery so take extra care.

Extra Gear & Equipment
  • A wetsuit will keep you warmer when you get wet. Furthermore, it will protect you from scratches and cushion you against bumps.
  • A PFD (Personal Flotation Device) will keep you afloat.
  • Use high-grip and quick drying footwear with thick soles to protect your feet from possible sharp rocks or shells.
  • Bring a diving knife so you can free yourself should you get caught in seaweeds.
  • Use a waterproof backpack with a splash cover.
  • Bring a windproof shell to keep you warm and bring extra dry clothing.

Getting Started

Canyoneering is not a variation on Hiking that you can just progress into. We recommend trying it first with an expert guide/instructor. If you find it appealing, make sure to learn the necessary rock climbing and water techniques.

As a safety guideline, make sure that you know the nature of Coasteering before trying it. Likewise, learn the necessary skills and understand the risks involved. In addition, it is very important to do it under the supervision or guidance of an experienced guide or instructor.
