Canyoning - Canyoneering
As the word suggests, Canyoning or Canyoneering is done through, into or across canyons, ravines or crevasses. In this section, know more about this Hiking Discipline - its nature, terrain, challenges and dangers, as well as the necessary gear and equipment.
Terrain
Canyons often have a river or lake at the bottom which could mean you will have to wade or swim your way across to reach the opposite cliff. Canyoneering will confront you with a lot of unfriendly terrain such as waterfalls, pools, rock chasms, and other obstacles found in canyons.
Challenges/Dangers
The major difference between Canyoning and normal Hiking lies in the obstacles posed by the cliffs that have to be climbed up and down. Canyoneering requires good techniques in Rock Climbing and Rappelling. Please visit our Rock Climbing website for more information about what Rock Climbing is all about and the gear and equipment necessary for the sport.
The frequent water crossings add new challenges and you need to have the right gear in order to protect you from Hypothermia. Also, beware of slippery wet footwear that can cause you to lose your grip. Before you head out, make sure to check the weather conditions and ask local experts about the dangers of flash floods.
Extra Gear & Equipment
- A wetsuit will keep you warmer when you get wet. Furthermore, it will protect you from scratches and cushion you against bumps.
- A PFD (Personal Flotation Device) will keep you afloat when dealing with river rapids.
- Use high-grip and quick drying footwear.
- Use a waterproof backpack with a splash cover.
- Bring the necessary Rock Climbing equipment and gear such as Climbing Harness, Climbing Ropes, Climbing Helmets, Carabiners, etc.
- Bring a windproof shell to keep you warm and bring extra dry clothing.
Getting Started
Canyoneering is not a variation on Hiking that you can just progress into. We recommend trying it first with an expert guide/instructor. If you find it appealing, make sure to learn the necessary rock climbing and water techniques.
Canyoneering is an exciting sport. Make sure to learn the necessary skills and techniques before heading out. In addition, it is very important to do it under the supervision or guidance of an experienced guide or instructor.
