Evaluating Hiking Abilities

Planning a hike should always start with evaluating your own abilities, comparing them to your Hiking plans and changing your plans accordingly. People get hurt when they overestimate their own abilities or take a hike without proper preparation. Before you start any hike, you should always consider the following:
Evaluate your Physical Hiking Abilities.
Know your own physical abilities and limitations. There are a lot of factors that will affect how physically challenging your hike is going to be and you should always take the worst case scenarios into account. Take the
Weather Conditions,
Terrain Conditions, and
Altitudes into account when judging your Hiking Plans. When it comes to your own physical condition, take your endurance or strength into account. Hiking is a very specific exercise especially when you plan on bringing a heavy backpack. Your body will need time to adjust to the added and specific strains of Hiking. Evaluate your Technical Hiking Knowledge, Outdoor Skills, & Hiking Experience.
Know you own abilities and limitations when it comes to your Technical Hiking & Outdoor Knowledge, Skills, and Experience. Do not plan a hike that requires climbing rock faces, crossing rivers, outdoor camping, food gathering, water filtering, compass navigation, or other skills if you do not know anything about them. These are skills that you need to learn before you can practice them. This website can help you learn some basics but you will need practice before you can perform these skills.
Evaluate your Mental Readiness.
Know your own mental stability and strength. Consider how you would deal with possible accidents or unforeseen situations such as how would you react when you get lost or twist your ankle. Mentally prepare yourself for such incidents and work out in your mind how you would deal with these situations.
It is very important to determine if you can meet the demands of Hiking. Make sure to assess your physical abilities and mental readiness before you go.
