Is there anytime that it's ok to hike alone or is it ok to hike alone? My wife doesn't like it when I hike alone.
I don't have any friends that like to hike, so I often do hike alone.

it's fun to hike alone, you don't have to worry about going too fast or too slow, just the heavy load by yourself though hahaha

i understand your wife's fear, hikers get lost or die in freak accidents in the mountains

Morality has to do with killing or stealing from others but with adult choices, I don't see it.

i had a friend once (god bless her soul) she went hiking with us and decided on her own to sweep. we didn't realize our sweeper was gone until we got to the campsite. it wasn't out of character for her to figure a different trail so we didn't worry until sunrise came and there was still no sign of her. we went searching for her for days, when we found her, she was at the bottom of a very high cliff, literally folded from the waist down. those who were really close to her said she's been talking about death and dying but never really thought she'd get around to doing it herself. they all thought she was too vain to throw herself over a cliff.

Your future today is different from your future tomorrow.

I am totally on the same thinking as skygazer here. One of my passions is hiking and trekking solo and my ultimate passion is soloing in winter from over nighters to month long treks in the deep white.
When you do anything in the great outdoors alone the risks are always greater. I know for me it is the ultimate test of my skills and the knowledge of the outdoors.
I think one of the most important things you should do when going along is always leave a detailed plan of where you are going and when you will get back and leave it with someone you trust and always keep with in your limits.
I wrote a story for www.outdoorjapan.com a while back on the same subject so check it out

there's a perfectly rational reason why the idea of you hiking alone doesnt appeal to your wife. SAFETY IN NUMBERS, so to speak.
the best thing for you to do is build a network or find friends who like hiking. you can go to local gyms or wall climbing venues, before you know it, you're making plans with other hikers!

Trips like that in winter are a lot of fun. For someone with the right skills and experience it is well worth doing. Doing anything solo in extreme conditions is a real test of oneself and abilities and well for sure find out at about what you are made of. Anyone who has done it well know what I mean.
Can I ask, What idea is that?

Hey Folks!
Thanks for all the comments. Obviously you have to stay within your abilty, and not put yourself in any danger. Like, hiking in the middle of winter alone, when you never have before. One thing people have told me is to let someone know exactly where your going and stick to your planned hike.
Thanks Again
Aaron

Not a problem here in north Florida - the weather is mild, elevation doesn't change much, and crevasses are few & far between.
I worry more about the critters - but they seem to be willing to avoid me.
Occasionally, I like to walk the local woods on a bright moonlit night. The night is my friend - I don't fear it like many folks. If y'all hear of the return of the "Swamp Ape" - it might just be me . . .

I hike alone often (sometimes by choice, sometimes no one to go with at the time) and have experienced no problems. However, I agree that the risks DO increase out by yourself. I would suggest using common sense - leave your route and plans with family, carry cell phone (if signal is available) for emergencies, carry emergency supplies (and know how to use them), etc.

Guess it comes down to what we are comfortable doing... are the benefits derived from the experience worth the risks associated with it?

I know this is only my second post but how about invest in a SPOT Satellite Messenger
This way she shouldn't worry (or have any reason to) and you'll even have a little piece of mind from knowing you have it just in case something does go wrong?
For around $150.00 and then pennies for each transmission you not only have an Instant GPS 9-1-1 signal but you can also post messages on a website and give hourly or daily locations of your hike?

Here's a couple websites to find out more.

I don't know about you but I have a wife and if a $150.00 gets me out the door easier each time I want to go off for the day then that's worth it's weight in gold if you ask me!
haha..
Word of warning, I just found out about this one so I'm still looking to see if it's the best deal out there on this kind of thing?
