When I clean my pack I usually shake the trash and dirt out and just hose the pack in side and out with the garden hose. For tuff stains I use a mild soap or even a medium bristle brush. I've used baking soda (make a paste) for blood stain - mine. I would be carefull using soap, I would think it would take away the water proofing. Even under normal use you may have to re-apply the water proofing. When I'm done washing the packs I just let them air-dry in the sunlight / freshair. I also use those fresh smelling dryer sheet to keep the inside of the pack smelling fresh = the bugs like it also. Good Luck. LR

In over 30 years of hitting the mountains and trails I've never every cleaned any of my personal backpacks . I clean the ones I supply for my clients on my trips but my own personal packs I never touch and I have found out that I haven't yet had to re-water proof them and they last longer than the ones I clean .
My father used to say to me .
" If you gear doesn't smell, you haven't done enough "
hi! i never wash my backpack... just wipe it clean, sometimes get wet towels, like baby wipes, then just clean the bag inside and out.. it helps with the odor.
All you need to do is follow the manufacturers instructions in cleaning the bag. This will ensure that you are doing the right thing, for you bag to live longer and you could able to maximised its usage.
