I am doing some research for school and I was wondering if anybody knew, or could refer me to where I could find the information, how many calories the average person would burn on a moderate, say 3 mile hike? Thank you.

check out http://www.coolnurse.com/calories.htm. It has calories burned per minute (carrying a backpack) for several different weight ranges. Hope this helps!

Huh, thats a tough calculation. Anyway, hiking is also a good form of exercise. For me I'd rather hike than take a course on walking for fitness. My friend is currently enrolled in that PE subject and I just though why did she not chose Outdoor recreation instead (that includes hiking)?

walking is one of the greatest form of exercise out there.. with the added weight in backpacks, no wonder us hikers can really have that full-body workout..

When I was a kid, my mom won't allow me to carry heavy backpacks. She said that as I grow older my spinal cord will bend and it will affect my posture. However, that did not not stop me from carrying my backpack when hiking. As long as I am happy doing my thing, I guess there will be no room for 'worries". Hail to hikers
