I just got back a few day ago from our yearly Search and Rescue Training (SAR). While out I ate my normal "Mountain House" meals. We'll let just say I spent all running into the woods using the bathroom - NOT good. The weather was good, temps were warm. I had a mad stomache problem, which led to dehydration. I almost became a rescuee. I got back to camp and got some IV fluids, water, and real food, I was back on my feet within 24 hours. I checked my prebacked foods, they date are good, and seals were OK. I tried other meals (MRE's, and other brands with the same minor results. I'm not sure what's going on. Maybe I've developed an allergy to the preservatives or something.
Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas. My gear and equipment is a big part of what I do. My food supply and health is what keeps me going and other depend on me and my team. Running into the woods is not part of the plan. I'll be doing some local experimenting on other foods, but I may have to go back to the old school way of thing - beans in can. Many thanks for your thoughts or ideas
i don't usually bring a lot of canned foods during hiking trips because yeah, its true, the weight of how much food you bring along is important. i bring some pre-prepared packet meals, either rice or noodle based but it works out fine especially when you add some extra hard cheese, salami or tuna. i always bring some dried mashed potato or some chopped cashews and nuts just to have the needed protein and carbohydrates essential for the long hiking trip..
Most pre-packaged meals have loads of MSG and other preservatives. Might be causing a reaction?
You could try 'real' rice and lentils - a good full meal of needed nutrients. Add some meat if the rice&lentils alone check good.
Also, has your doctor checked your Gluten antibodies? "Ciliac Disease" is more prevalent than many realize. My buddy has it - any wheat or other gluten-loaded foods do the same thing to him!
some pre-packaged meals have come to be healthy nowadays.. or so they say.. hehe.. i always check the labels and make sure that i dont load on msg.. yes, lentils and beans are good to bring too..

Thanks for the post. I haven't yet figured out what the issues are. I'm still exploring other diets and alternative foods. Nothing positve yet - but still staying positive. Thanks
Live life as if were your last on planet earth, then wake up and go to work. Hell I guess thats what the weekend are for.
