I was just wondering how many of you prefer to use a tarp or a tent when possible. i like to use a simple tarp with some parachute chord while i wrap myself in a bivy. but i when go out in the bush i like to travel light and have an easy camp to make and break down.
I'd like to hear some of your thoughts, comments or questions

Hi Travis
Thought I would jump in here as well and give my take on this
hard and fast : tarp, especially on short trips.
slow and easy : tent
For me it is horses for courses.
Sometimes when I am doing short solo trips I like to go very simple and light so a tarp is perfect, sometimes I don't even take that.
On long treks like a week or longer I prefer to take a tent. I've spent many years roughing it out in my military days so a bit of comfort is great, plus I don't mind carry weight, which I think is a dying art.

bp,
thats my policy too. i try to use a tarp setup when possible, especially when im solo or in a small group on short trips. but for just a casual camping trip i like a tent, nice and comfortable.

A couple of years ago I came across a tent with a one piece pole system from mont-bell .
The poles are folded up, you throw them out and they all connect together and make a frame. then you just contact the tent, take less than 10min .
When I 'm family camping with the car I take everything plus the kicthen sink, it's nice not to think about packing . Throw it all in, that's casual

I've been using a small and light-weight 'bivytent' for a year or so now - great compromise between shelter and weight. I can set it up in minutes, and it fits my 6'4" frame!
The downside is, if it rains really long - can't sit up in the bivytent. So, I do carry a light-weight tarp/poncho along too, just in case!
If I will be camping in one place for a few days, I will use my bigger dome tent. Most of my multiday camping is on MC roadtrips, so weight isn't as important as when hiking.

I go for tarp, however, when you are for comfortable trips and getaways, go for tent

try if the hybrids will do for your needs. and i referred to it as hybrid because it sort of provides a balance between the tarp and the tent.. I forgot the brand, but my friend uses something which looks like a Betalite from Black Diamond, but lighter.

Using tent is still better. There are lots of tent styles today that are so handy as the same time easier to put up. Though you could stil consider using tarp instead, or at the second thought you may use both. Bring them with you, if you are strong and patient enough to carry them all the way.

heavy packers in long trips does consider everything they take along the trip.. yes, you can choose to bring two kinds, but heck i wont do that.. depends on the trip, but since i hike with a group, we take a tent..
