common advice is to pack the heavy stuff on top close to your back, lighter ones at the bottom. but i think it's up to how comfortable it is for you. truth is subjective

that is mostly for balance which is only logical but i also agree about truth being subjective

sleeping bag goes at the bottom, everything else i prioritize according to frequency of use like water, food, jacket, hat, whatever. tent though is always on the side compartment

like NickG i also pack things according to importance and order of use eg i will certainly use the water when i hit the trail so it's always on top. i have no problem with balance whatsoever, if i feel i can't handle it i simply don't bring it along

it's all a matter of proper weight distribution, i put the heavy ones at the bottom. light ones on top.

I also use priority when packing it up. For example my tent is always on top along with my gortex parka and pants then my sleeping back below and change of clothes and other misc stuff at the bottom including food. I make sure my tent is always on top. Especially if it looks like rain, because who wants to pull everything out just to get it soaked to put up a tent? I also keep my spare water on the outside of my pack to make it easy to get to it when ya need it. I also usually carry my camelback with me as well to make sure I stay well hydrated.

Once you have your new, shiny pack you are going to need to fill it. Tips for packing clothes , money/documents , and other bits can be found here – and tips on how to safeguard these belongings can be found here . More backpack information can be found here .

Like someone else said before packing your pack is a matter of preference and I think alot of trial and error to find what works for you .
Here is what works for me .
Multi-day trips : Starting from bottom of the pack to the top .
- Sleeping bag, clothes
- gas, cooking gear, camp gear
- food
- sleeping pad ( blow up pad, always keep inside your pack )
- spare warm top, tent
- (lid pocket) first aid kit, repair kit, toilet paper, snacks
- (outside pocket) rain gear
- (outside of pack) tent poles, water bottle
Note:
- A good idea is to make sure your tent is handy and easy to get at without opening and getting into your pack. When it is time to camp putting up the tent is usually the first thing to do so it should be the first thing handy. If you have to put up your tent when it is raining, the last thing you want to do is open your backpack and take things out to get to your tent like someone has mention.
- I like to keep my tent between the lid and the main body of the pack so if it's raining I can lossen the lid straps and just pull in out without opening my pack and getting everything wet. I used to keep my tent outside of my pack but I found when hiking in wooded areas that I could get holes in it, If I'm hiking in the alpine above the tree line it isn't a problem and I prefer to have my tent on the outside ( very easy and fast to get at )
- For me I like to keep heavy things to the top of the pack so most of the weight will sit on my shoulders and on top of my hips. If the heavy weight is on the bottom of my pack, I find that the weight sits right on my hips and pulls my hips down putting more pressure on my shoulders.
- Always make sure to dry bag your sleeping bag and clothes so they don't get wet .
- keep gas under your food, so if you have any leeks, your food should be ok.
trial and error . "The more you do it , The better you become at it"
