you want old school advice? we used to get clear, thick plastic bags as big as our pack (the dimensions are the same) and line the pack with it. keeps all the contents dry.

we used to do that too. the plastic is nearly as thick as a raincoat but not as heavy. i used to get mine from hardware supplies.

take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints, kill nothing but time.

with dry bags, it's sort of a compartment with selected items to keep dry. with pops there though, it's the entire pack! how cool is that?

...and if a 6 turned out to be 9, i don't mind. i don't mind...

a dry bag can also double as a floating device when emptied and inflated

does that really work? i've seen them around but i never thought something so simple could actually work.  because if it really does, i don't need to shell out that much on watertight gore-tex boots!

take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints, kill nothing but time.

that means you need to get a new pair of watertight gore-tex boots. the new ones are not as heavy and as i'd like to describe it, 'industrial' in weight. i was amazed the last time i was in the gear shop and they were light as a feather

try using the bedroll protector, I find it more effective than plastic bags. Tried and tested over rough weather!

i remember the first time i went hiking, i had a jansport daypack made of something that felt like canvass and stupid me thought i had time to read, brought catcher in the rye with me. weather was unpredictable and i slid the way down in mud. y'all know what happened then.
