Hi everyone!
I am working on a school assignment about whether it is ethical or not for companies to post "fake" postings in forums that promote their product.
For example, what if a 'fake' person wrote:
"I just bought these amazing new Timberland fastpack actuate low hiking shoes! They are so wicked! I bought the grey and black colored ones! They were only $59.00 at bentgear.com. My feet feel so light in them when I'm out and about! I totally recommend you try them out! Best bang for your buck!"
Do you think it is ethical for companies to create user accounts in forums [pretending to be a real user] to advertise / promote their product through a 'fake person/posting.'
Yes or no?
Your opinion is more than welcome!

Absolutly I think it's wrong for anyone to advertise a product like that. I even personally have a problem recomending a product that I haven't tested personally. I believe there's so many products of all sorts available in today's market and we all tend to rely on each others opinion. This is one of the main reasons I like this forum, I truely believe most people here are honest and express thier true thoughts. Hope this helps.

HEY, that person had just responded to my post. I didn't consider it a fake post, but if it were then I consider it unethical. It had no effect on my decision btw.

i personally don't think it's unethical. i also don't find it "fake" the way you describe it. a lot,if not all, companies, artists, actors and actresses do this. they build their websites and have some of their ppl do some activity in their forums if they have been silent for a while. you think all the ppl in colin farrell or britney spears' forums are real? of course not. that's marketing. i don't see anything wrong with it. remember, these websites generate income for every click you make.

Hello again!
So I gave my assignment results in class today and my professor said I should create a post to let the people who commented on my original post know what their opinions were used for:
I am in a class called, "Information and Technological Management." In this class we covered a chapter called, "Social, Legal, and Ethical Issues in the Digital Firm." I then was given a case about companies using forums to post information to promote themselves and whether or not they should identify themselves, be biased with information etc. I had to go through an 'Ethical Framework' from the chapter. Your comments on my original post was great in that it provided me thoughts and opinions other than my own. Thanks so much!
ps: if you are ever in the BC area and are looking for great places to hike, send me an email @ diddumslalu@hotmail.com
