Hi I’m a student attending Birmingham City University. I have a new project involving sourcing and manufacturing 3 hiking products for a company. It would greatly aid me in my tasks if you would take the time to answer a few simple questions.

What are the mains factors that affect your hiking experience?
What do you think is the most useful and/or product when hiking?
Is there a product that is always hard to track down?
Does anything annoy you about hiking gear or shopping for hiking gear? Colour, size, technology, male/female/kids? Etc
Is there a product you buy more frequently than others? Is yes please state.
What are your main factors effecting your choice of gear? Colour, size, technology, price? Etc
How much does new technology effect your choice of gear and your hiking experience?
Where do you usually buy your hiking gear from? Specific company? Online/in store?
Have you ever used Treckmates.co.uk?

Thank you for your time! Do you have any other comments?

Hi Mily

I've been hiking for more than 20 years! scary as that is :-) so hopefully I can give you some sensible answers!

What are the mains factors that affect your hiking experience?
in terms of equipment - comfort and practicality are probably my main concerns - an item needs to do the job its intended for without giving me blisters, rubbing, itching, having fiddly bits when you're hands are frozen. Anything that becomes uncomfortable or doesn't live up to its billing in the conditions its intended for soon become a source of irritation and detract from your hiking experience

What do you think is the most useful and/or product when hiking?
Boots and backpack!

Is there a product that is always hard to track down?
I'm just about to climb Mt Kilimanjaro and I wanted a replacement pair of fleece/fibrepile leggings - could I find them anywhere? not a chance!

Does anything annoy you about hiking gear or shopping for hiking gear? Colour, size, technology, male/female/kids? Etc
Information overload! Everything seems to come with a science and engineering lesson attached. All I need to know is whether something is going to keep me warm and dry at 16000ft after 9 hours of hiking through a howling blizzard!

Is there a product you buy more frequently than others? Is yes please state
socks - I go through lots of socks!

What are your main factors effecting your choice of gear? Colour, size, technology, price? Etc
Comfort and practicality are my main criteria - I've bought hi tech stuff that fits nicely in the shop but when it comes to getting out on a hike it has rubbed or chaffed or doesn't wick sweat as it claims to or once you get a bit sweaty the material smells

How much does new technology effect your choice of gear and your hiking experience?
Not that much really - I've just got some new hiking boots and the pair I chose were the most comfortable and had the best ankle support - I'd sprained my ankle 3 days prior to purchase so ankle support was a key factor in choice of boots, the technology part didn't come into it
My backpack was the most expensive I could afford at the time and it was fitted specifically to my size - that was 20 years ago! it's never let me down
My RAB sleeping bag, I did pay attention to the technology - it had to be rated to -30C so I had it custom made.

Where do you usually buy your hiking gear from? Specific company? Online/in store?

I usually research my gear online to figure out whats new, whats changed, what other hikers are wearing/using for specific purposes - then I go to a store and try it on - I don't favour specific companies or brands, its just what works best for me.

Have you ever used Treckmates.co.uk?
no - I've never heard of them! :-( although I am British, I've been living in Australia for the last 11 years.

Hope that helps you a bit!

good luck
