We have two options for our NationThree Peaks Tours:

For experienced hikers and keen beginers our 'Three Peaks Challenge' (7 days/6 nights) offers a unique opportunity to tackle the highest peaks of England, Scotland and Wales in a single vacation. On each of the mountain days, a tough and satisfying hike is rewarded by the comforts and local conviviality provided by the best of British pubs, inns and kitchens.

Beginning with an ascent of Snowdon in the rugged Cambrian mountains, we then move to the celebrated and picturesque English Lake District to climb England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike, and we finish the tour in the highlands of Scotland on the summit of the highest mountain in the United Kingdom, Ben Nevis.

Spreading the Three Peaks Challenge over seven days, with one complete day allowed for each major ascent, means we can choose the finest routes on each of the mountains, away from the standard trails. Between each of the big mountain days we have a relaxed journey and time for further walks and exploration. On this trip you will discover the finest mountain scenery in the UK whilst enjoying the best of British hospitality.

Ascending all of the National Three Peaks in one continuous round is a rewarding and comprehensive challenge and we take the strain by organising everything you need from the moment you join us until we say goodbye.

For a more moderately paced tour our 'Three Peaks Explorer' (10 days/9 nights)

offers you an opportunity to climb the highest mountain in each of Scotland, England and Wales while touring the marvellous countryside in which these mountains are set. The ascents of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), the resting place of King Arthur, Scafell Pike, the hub of the English Lake District, and Ben Nevis, highest of them all rising to 4409ft, all offer magnificent panoramas of the surrounding countryside and are a prized achievement. This tour with its accent on exploration and a relaxed pace turns the ascent of the 'National Three Peaks' into a thoroughly enjoyable experience, within the reach of anyone of average fitness.

The mountain days are carefully staged and are spaced out amongst gentle walks and visits to medieval Welsh castles, traditional Cumbrian fell villages and the historic glens of Scotland. During this tour, we will also explore the more remote and less visited areas in the stunning and rugged countryside of Welsh Snowdonia and the picturesque Lake District. Our itinerary includes cruises on two of England’s longest lakes, riding a cable car above the Great Glen in Scotland, and guided tours of Caernarfon Castle, Carlisle Cathedral, a copper mine, and even a whiskey distillery.

Our local knowledge and contacts ensure you get the very best of your visits to these regions. As with all Wandering Aengus' tours, we pride ourselves on the choice of your accommodation using established inns and hotels of charactor in the heart of the mountain areas which we visit.

SCHEDULES & ITINERARIES
Itinerary for the Three Peaks Challenge Tour (7 days)

Day 1. DRIVE TO NORTH WALES

We will meet you at Manchester Airport from where it is a little more than 1½ hours and approximately 100 miles to the heart of Snowdonia. We stay at the Pen-y-Gwryd Hotel, a warm and cosy Inn steeped in climbing historyand holding a unique place in the hearts and minds of all British hikers and climbers.

Day 2. THE SNOWDON HORSESHOE.

Our first Peak of the trilogy. There are a number of routes for climbing Snowdon, or Y’ Wyddfa in the local language, and the one which we have chosen for this hikers’ challenge tour is considered the very best. The ‘Snowdon Horseshoe’ is a complete traverse of the ridges which enclose the high mountain lakes of Lynn Glas and Llyn Llydaw. This classic route first climbs the imposing pyramid of Crib Goch and then follows an airy traverse of a fine arête which runs for ¾ of a mile to Snowdon’s nearest neighbour, Garnedd Ugain. A short descent to Bwlch Glas (the siver saddle) brings us to the final 285 feet of Snowdon’s NW ridge. We complete the horseshoe, traversing the whaleback ridge of Y Lliwedd before descending to the warm conviviality of the bar of our climbing Inn.

Day 3. THE ENGLISH CONNECTION

Our journey today takes us first along the coastline of North Wales and through the Red Rose County of Lancashire to reach the rugged mountain heart of England’s premier National Park. Nestling between the Skiddaw Mountains and Derwentwater Lake, Keswick has an idyllic location and is one of the country’s major centres for outdoor recreation and adventure. After checking in to our hotel and some lunch, there is an optional hike to the summit of Catbells. The most famous of Lakeland guidebook authors, Alfred Wainwright, wrote of this shapely fell, “Words cannot adequately describe the rare charm of Catbells, nor its ravishing view” and he concluded that “No Keswick holiday is consummated without a visit to its summit”.

Day 4. ASCENT OF SCAFELL PIKE

Today we climb England’s highest mountain. Again we have chosen as our route the finest of the many possible routes to our objective, Scafell Pike. Starting in the tiny community of Rosthwaite a little way beyond the head of Derwent Water we climb first to the summit of Glaramara and follow this with a delightful walk along a broad grassy ridge to Esk Hause, Esk Pike, Ill Crag, Broad Crag, and Scafell Pike itself.

Day 5. LOCH LOMAND AND THE HIGHLANDS

We have the morning free to enjoy the picturesque charm of Keswick before heading north through Glasgow and along the shores of Loch Lomond. As we leave the bonny bonny banks we enter the ‘Heelands’. Crossing the wild reaches of Rannoch Moor we pass Buchaile Etive Mor, the ‘Great shepherd of Etive’, and the ‘Three Sisters’ of Glencoe to reach another renowned climbers’ Inn, the Clachaig which stands in splendid isolation in the glen.

Day 6. ASCENT OF BEN NEVIS

Today it’s the big one. It’s a 15 minute journey to the bustling town of Fort William situated on Loch Linnhe. A short distance beyond the town is the entrance to the beautiful Glen Nevis and ourstarting point for our final hike and the climax of the trip. Again we have chosen to climb ‘The Ben’ by its most interesting and spectacular hiking route, which involves a tour of the ‘Nevis Horseshoe’, taking in the peaks of Carn Dearg Meadhonach, and Carn Dearg and reaching the summit via the spectacular Carn Mor Dearg Arête. This is a classic ridge walk and, apart from the start which is shared with the normal or ‘Tourist’ path, is wonderfully secluded. This route also allows for magnificent views of the impressive north face of the mountain, a facet that is not seen from the ordinary route. On reaching the summit of Britain’s highest peak after a final rocky scramble, we will no doubt have a grand celebration. From the summit cairn and emergency shelter we make our way across the rocks of the summit plateau before desceding the normal route back into Glen Nevis from where we return to the Clachaig for a celebratory dinner and an evening of conviviality recounting our Three Peaks Odyssey.
