Kackar Mountains Trek

Lushly wooded on the north, pines are succeeded at lower levels by chestnut, hornbeam and beech trees, with tea plantations and hazelnut groves spilling down towards the waves. The contrasting southern slopes are patched by summer pastures where black bulls graze. Lakes, springs and streams are plentiful and clear. The crown of the range is the Altiparmak (six fingered) and Kackar mountains, Mount Kackar, at 3932m, is the fifth highest peak in Turkey.

Once home to Georgian and Armenian christians, several wonderful 10th C churches are hidden in the southern valleys. The main towns are Yusufeli, on the south of the range, and Camlihemsin on the north; they are reached from Erzurum and Trabzon respectively.Best times to visit are between June and September, when the snow has receded from the valleys, the weather is almost guaranteed and wild flowers clad the pastures.

Many trekking routes criss-cross the range; to save carrying heavy loads on the steep terrain, trekkers usually employ a local guide and a team of mules for their baggage. A trek can be combined with an ascent of Mt Kackar, swims in the glacial lakes, and visits to the best of the Georgian churches.

Nearby Attractions:

This new trek offers the best of the Turkish Pontic (Northwestern) Alps in a continuous high level trekking tour. It extends along the south slopes of the rugged granite Kackar and Altiparmak (six-fingered) mountains, and mainly avoids the north side of the range, where the weather is unreliable. These spectacular mountains are noted for the variety and exuberance of summer flowers, their wildlife, including bear, wild goat, eagles and vultures, and the hardy black cattle. The route uses well-established mule trails between villages and summer pastures, and less distinct, rocky paths at higher levels. Trekkers stay in small pensions in the traditional highland villages, and, supported by baggage mules, trek through the summer pastures, camping in dramatic high altitude settings alongside tiny lakes and streams. The tour starts at the village of Yaylalar (Hevek), and finishes 35km further east, where a massive 1000 year old Georgian church nestles in the trees above the village of Altiparmak (Barhal).
