Alpine Exploratory Sierra Aitana Walking Holiday
This short holiday aims to sample the best of the Sierra Aitana range (also known as Las Marinas) while staying at one base, near the picturesque mountain village of Finestrat. The Costa Blanca's second highest and most spectacular mountain, Puig Campana (1408m), rises above the village as a bold lump of rock. It's an exciting walk to the top, in places steep but quite manageable, and this forms one of the possible day walks from the base. Public transport is useful for getting to more good walking in the range. The holiday's short length and the convenient location of the walks mean that it could be ideal for those seeking a good amount of European walking for only a short time away from the UK. It's hard to believe just how handy both Alicante and Benidorm are, once in the mountains! The itinerary given is a plan only and will change according to the group and the conditions.
This holiday involves 4 days of moderate walking, typically climbing 700m in 15km. The highest altitude you might reach is 1408m and the valleys range from sea level to around 300m.
The Costa Blanca's mountains are typically Spanish. The walking is almost entirely on paths, being a mixture of wide forest tracks, narrow paths through woods or scrub, and steeper rocky paths up hillsides. The trickiest section of walking that might be encountered is the ascent of Puig Campana's central gully, where the path is steep and verges on a scree slope - but it is quite manageable for a moderately fit hillwalker. The paths are usually marked with painted waymarks, often white and yellow stripes, and signposts have been put up at popular junctions. Underfoot will be a mixture of stones and hardpacked earth. There are occasional road sections on some of the routes, which are kept to a minimum but which let you reach the best mountain walking. Alert walkers will catch glimpses in certain places of some almost Alpine views.
