The Gran Paradiso is the highest peak in the Graian Alps and also the highest mountain that is entirely within Italy. It is located in the Parco Nazional del Gran Paradiso which is one of the oldest natural reserves in Europe. The Gran Paradiso is a dominant mountain when seen from distant summits, but from the closer valley, it is hidden behind its surrounding mountains.
There are 2 normal routes to the Gran Paradiso: via the Rif Federico Chabod and via the Rif Vittorio Emanuele II. The latter starts in Pont, at the end of the Val Savaranche, where a good path starts to the hut. From there, the way leads mostly over gentle, moderately cracked glaciers to a col in the final crest, near the top. Getting to the Madonna, and also getting to the actual top, involves a few steps of climbing II. Apart from the last few meters to the top, the route is easy but fairly long. This route is one the great classics in the Alps, done each year by large crowds, but altitude effects are to be reckoned with.
The best time to climb Gran Paradiso in between June and September. It is also possible to practice ski-alpinism during the spring and reach up to a few meters under the peak. It is absolutely necessary to use the crampons and the ice-axe. It’s also recommended to climb on the rope. Several campings are also open during the summer along the road to Pont.
