A heliski outing. With the very rigid regulations practised in France, heliskiing is often carried out in Italy or Switzerland. This activity stimulates the most thrilling of sensations and permits the discovery of inaccessible high mountain areas. After a magnificent helicopter flight, experience the surge of excitement while descending through virgin snow. | | Snowboarding | In order to show their commitment to the development of new snowboarding and skiing events, and in particular the organisation of the Half Pipe and Ski Cross World Cups for 4 years now, Les Contamines Montjoie has come up with an innovative concept: “Cross Zones”. These areas, which are reserved for thrill seekers (skiers or snowboarders) were designed with a multi-faceted approach, featuring a range of sites, levels, modules and styles.
Cross Zones, which are perfect for freestyle, are also very safety-minded, with signs up showing the level of difficulty of each module.
Setting up the Cross Zones is co-ordinated by their organisers and the slopes service. Their upkeep requires daily work and has to be very responsive to weather conditions.
You will find 2 Cross Zones in the Les Contamines ski area, which are easily accessible and are served by quick ski lifts that are nearby, enabling good turnaround at the site.
The Tierces Cross Zone runs from an altitude of 1,800 m up to 2000 m, on the ski slope of the same name. Over a 3 ha area, it has several adapted modules, including 2 cross-country trails (for skiing and snowboarding), 3 tables, a spine, a big air jump, and 2 hand rails. It is intended for both beginners as well as experienced people and is often used for freestyle events.
The Loyers Cross Zone covers 2 ha at an altitude of 1,200 m, right in the heart of the village on the Loyers slope. It offers easy access, and provides an area featuring a hand rail and a super pipe, which is a sort of snow half-pipe that is the ski resort’s pride and joy: it is 120 m long with 5 m-high walls. This super pipe, which has sizing in line with the standards adopted for international competitions, is reserved exclusively for experts. | | Snowshoeing | A “Raquettes Refuge” snowshoes getaway stay, following the trappers’ trails Yet another way of appreciating the snow…
Snowshoe walking, which for a long time was denigrated, is becoming increasingly popular. Intended for members of the public who prefer a more relaxed pace, it holds pleasant surprises in store for those who give it a go… So why not give the alternative to skiing a go by trying out a 100 % snowshoes stay including nights in an alpine hut? 2 to 6-day packages are offered by the Guides Bureau. Don’t worry, there is nothing exhausting about them: you only have 5 hours of walking per day through some of the finest landscapes the region has to offer.
The Balcons Enneigés du Mont Blanc (Mont Blanc Snowy Balconies) excursion will enable you to discover the Montjoie High Valley and the Pays du Mont Blanc Valley, part of which is in a nature reserve. This superb walk offers varied landscapes encompassing plateaus, forests, combes, crests and summits where people seldom venture, and which are suitable for snowshoe walking... A stay where you will enjoy all the pleasure of observing and understanding the mountain environment, its fauna, and the calm and sense of well-being it provides. |
