Gorilla and Chimpanzee Safaris
Our Great primates expedition tour is a hiking adventure in search of two great apes- Chimpanzees and Mountain Gorillas in Rwanda. In addition to these two, one has an opportunity to visit the Nyungwe colobus monkeys in Nyungwe forest and Virunga golden monkey in Volcanoes park.
Nyungwe, the largest mountain rain forest remaining in Africa is a nature lovers paradise ideal for walking, hiking, camping or picnics. With 13 recorded species of primates, 260 sepcies of trees, over 200 species of orchids and 275 species of birds, it a centre of biodiversity.
A guided walk in the Nyungwe forest is a whole learning experience as knowlegeable guides gives the names of plants, their uses and occassionally gives you the names of forest birds encountered or heard.
Tracking of the chimpanzees commences at Uwinka Tourists Centre at 06:00 Hrs. This activity require prior booking. Chimpanzee sighting is in Nyungwe forest is not guaranteed. However only a few of our clients have missed them. Acommodation at Gisakura Guest house is basic with clean rooms, shared or private showers.
Tracking gorillas commences at 07:00 at Kinigi park headquarters. It is not open to people below 15 years of age. Tracking is conducted by qualified guides.
Gorilla permits require advance purchase. If you intend to track in the high season of January, July, August and September, you are required to book your permits one year to six months in adance.

Great Primates Expedition 8 days/ 7 nights
Day 1
Arrival and transfer to your hotel. Overnight Mille Collines Bed and Breakfast
Day 2 Kigali-Nyungwe
After breakfast, drive to Nyungwe. On the way visit the Nyanza King’s Palace, Butare Museum and Genocide Memorial of Murumabi. Overnight Gisakura Guest House Bed and Breakfast
Day 3 Coloured trails of Nyungwe
After breakfast enter Nyungwe forest to track the colobus monkeys. Thereafter, return to your lodge for lunch. After is spent at leisure or on optional activities like excursions to lakeshore town of Cyangugu, visits to tea plantations and factory. Overnight Gisakura Guest House Bed and Breakfast
Day 4 Kibuye – Gisenyi
After breakfast, enter Nyungwe forest (06 :00) to track the chimpanzee. Thereafter return to the Guest House for lunch followed by a drive to Kibuye. Dinner and overnight Kibuye Guest House BB
Day 5 Kibuye-Gisenyi
Spend the morning in Kibuye. In the afternoon drive to Gisenyi arriving in time for dinner and overnight at Kivu Sun Hotel BB.
Day 6 Gorillas in the mist
After breakfast, drive to Ruhengeri to track gorillas. Dinner and overnight Gorilla Nest hotel BB.
Day 7
Breakfast and track gorillas. In the afternoon, drive back to Kigali arriving in time for overnight Mille Collines Hotel BB
Day 8
After breakfast, have a city tour. In the afternoon transfer to the airport for your home flight.
